Lync 2013 "Microsoft Lync has stopped working" error

After testing Lync 2013 on about 50 PC's without issue, we have just deployed to about 500 clients.Every client that has a webcam of any make or model is now getting the following error and Lync 2013 does not run. Thanksfully we did leave Lync 2010 installed, and user can use this OK, but we want to fix-forward this issue. Can anyone suggest how to fix this for camera equipped machines? Seem a bit of a significant issue that Lync can't be upgraded where web-cams are present!

HI

First could you please update the Lync 2013 client & Deploy the Lync 2013 patches

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/dn788954

Second, the webcam which you have installed on machines, can you please try to install the web cam driver on one machine and then try.

these issue has been raised in technet, most of the issues were resolved either installed drivers of web cam or patches.

Regards

Hi,

Thanks for the response, I have been trawling through TechNet for this issue, but most of those responses quote a module that is failing.

I have seen the ones mentioning updating drivers for cameras and graphics cards, with varying degrees of success. Any new-build machines with Office 2013 (including Lync) work fine without needing driver updates, it is only when adding Lync 2013 to a PC that has Lync 2010 and a web-cam that this issue comes up.

The Lync updates are deployed through SCCM also, but these are not resolving the issue.

I've tried one driver update for the Microsoft HD 3000 web-cam, and that made no difference either, updated drivers and patches, still getting this error when opening Lync 2013 :-(

When removing Lync 2013 Standalone and installing Office 2013 including Lync there is no problem, and there is a known issue with the OCT in the Lync 2013 SP1 media meaning we had to deploy using a config.xml - is this another "Known issue" that means this deployment media from Microsoft can't be used to deploy Lync 2013?

We are in the situation with several hundred users all with varying hardware now having Lync 2013 that crashes on start-up, we would like to resolve this without requiring reboots or hardware recalls. If anyone can suggest any help, it would be greatly appreciated. Pushing out full Office 2013 is not an option unfortunately.

Thanks

Hi Martin,

in some cases this have helped with doing the following:

open cmd as administrator and type sfc /scannow

This will take 5-10 min.Check if you get any error message after its finished,if so it will say where you can find logfile to analyze.

Remove Lync profile ( http://tritoneco.com/2013/07/09/reset-microsoft-lync-client-cache/) and dont forget a reboot(or at least flushdns). Then sign back in (if it still remembers username, then profile not fully reset).

On computer with issue, sign in with another account (that has never signed in before) to see if its not profile related issue.

Thanks for the tips guys, but we have had to roll-back this deployment. This in itself has had serious issues, and we have lost confidence in the Lync deployment as a result of all this.No amount of driver installs, reboots, uninstalls of previous editions helped resolve the Lync 2013 crash on opening, it appears the install itself was corrupt. I'm sure with enough time we could have resolved the issue, but we did not have the time to investigate this.

We plan to now only deploy Lync 2013 as part of Office 2013, as this appears to be reliable and not cause issue on users machines.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply, it is appreciated.
